Scorching conditions and raging bushfires have devastated the dry landscape of Western Australia. With mercury levels expected to persist climbing above 40C (104F) over the next few days, a severe heatwave warning has been issued across a large portion of the southwestern region.

This situation come after this month's bushfires in another state, which caused the loss of homes and fatalities. Severe heatwave warnings have additionally been activated for the coming days in parts of SA and NSW, as a ridge of atmospheric pressure shifts eastward, bringing blazing heat to much of the area.

The mix of tinder-dry vegetation and unbroken high temperatures presents a dangerous scenario for firefighters.

Worldwide Weather Extremes Cause Disruption

Elsewhere, a metropolis was left in darkness last week after strong winds damaged the city’s power grid, with toppled trees bringing down electricity cables. The stormy weather also led to significant travel disruption at a major airport, where hundreds of flights were grounded. Severe damage to power systems is expected to cause further issues as service providers scramble to reconnect electricity to more than 1 million inhabitants.

Atypical Mist Covers Sunny Area

At the same time, a region famed for its clear skies and abundant sunshine has experienced one of its dullest and most overcast periods on record. A specific type of fog, which usually lingers for only a short time, has been unusually widespread and long-lasting this year, keeping temperatures at a major airport under 8C for over a week – the longest such streak in more than three decades. The prolonged haze has been driven by unprecedented autumn precipitation that resulted in soils waterlogged.
