UN:Me: A Psychological Horror That Blends Survival Horror with Social Deduction Mechanics

The recent Day of the Devs digital showcase unveiled a number of fascinating upcoming titles, but one especially has seized attention: UN:Me. Developed by Historia and Shueisha Games, this single-player experience seems to fuse together the dread-filled setting of a Silent Hill title with the paranoid deduction heart of Among Us.

"It's a distinctive game where a young woman containing several personalities inside her needs to flee from a maze of the mind," explains producer Yasukazu Kawai.

Entering a Shattered Mind

In UN:Me, players take control of an unnamed female protagonist seeming to be of high school age. Inside her exist four distinct souls, each with unique anxieties and motivations. These entities can take over at will, unleashing their deep-seated terrors upon her suddenly.

Judging by revealed gameplay, much of the action takes place within a creepy medical facility, while additional clips show the main character navigating a desolate church.

An Environment of Personal Horror

"What makes you afraid of? What makes you uncomfortable?" poses game director Shun Sasaki. "High places. Confined spaces. Authority figures. Elements that appear minor to other people can trigger something primal inside us. This game delves into that idea — anxieties that are unique to each person."

The central mechanic revolves around managing the persona that emerges at a particular time. However, these identities will switch against your will as you play. While exploring, every persona's anxieties become amplified and assault the girl in succession. When the soul changes, so does the specific fear the player encounters.

Unsettling Visuals and a Fatal Choice

Initially, UN:Me displays striking visual similarities with the Silent Hill franchise. The hospital is populated by orderlies who all share the same face, with disturbingly broad grins. Figures in the lobby have enormous blooms where their necks are. Floral motifs are a recurring theme, juxtaposing natural beauty with unnatural horror.

Yet, UN:Me presents a unique twist. Players are tasked with deducing which of the four entities haunting the protagonist is the "true" one. "Each of the souls claims that the body belongs to them," explains a developer. "Throughout the game, you must determine who is real."

Once players have deduced a soul is an impostor, they must eliminate it. However, since every entity can lie or hide the reality, it is incredibly simple to make a mistake.

"Perhaps you've already destroyed the real [soul] by your own actions," a voice suggests. "The final entity standing might be a fake. Either way, your choices are irreversible."

UN:Me does not yet have a publicly announced launch window, but it is available to follow on digital storefronts.
