During the bulk of the concluding season of *Stranger Things*, Holly Wheeler and Max Mayfield are imprisoned in a realm of memories constructed from the recollections of Vecna. Their quest for freedom in the pivotal sixth episode leads them to witness again a defining event from Henry's childhood—a moment that could contain the means to overcome him once and for all.

Unearthing the Secrets of the Cavern

After locating Max in the psychic realm dubbed Camazotz, Holly discovers she is hiding out in a grotto that Henry is terrified of. A clever observation a viewing device found in Henry's old home lets Holly see that the true terror lies not within the cave. When she lines up her view through the cap, she and Max plummet into a subterranean passage.

There, they witness a Henry as a boy find an wounded, fearful individual. Attempting assistance, the man reacts violently, wounding the boy in the hand. Fighting for his life, Henry strikes the man down with a rock. "Is this what corrupted him?" Holly questions through tears. It was a factor, but the act went deeper than a fight for life.

A Naval Mystery and A Spy's Mission

*The First Shadow* opens with the 1943 event, which transported a U.S. Navy ship into a realm known as the Abyss. Demogorgons assaulted it, and the only one to return was the captain, who came back in a vegetative state with an entirely new blood.

That survivor's offspring, a young Martin Brenner, sought to replicate this phenomenon in Nevada. However, a treacherous employee took experimental components to give to the Communist spies, who were desperate to launch their own interdimensional projects. The man in the tunnel was that very thief.

So, What's in the Case?

Given what is revealed about the doctor's experiments, the briefcase most likely held some of the altered blood. As shown, Henry is wounded and bleeding. It's probable he was infected upon handling the contents, leading to the origin of his telekinetic gifts—abilities he would inadvertently transfer to the kids under Brenner's care.

A second theory, the container could have held dark matter that eventually found its way to Hawkins Laboratory, where it acts to anchor the Upside Down. The stage play explains that Henry somehow wound up in the Abyss, returning hours later as a different person. From then on, he fights the influence of a dark entity, similar to how the character Will was controlled by the entity in season 2.

A Weaponized Emotion

His lasting fear associated with the mine demonstrates how utterly horrifying the encounter was for him. Even as he commands the army of monsters and attempts to pull the Abyss into Hawkins, a part of him lingers. Fear is his tool, and the show is setting up a final confrontation between him and Will, who has confronted his greatest terrors to gain strength.

His confrontation has neutralized a key tactic of Vecna. Furthermore, Will now is aware of what the monster's own weakness, and this may grant a key upper hand in the ultimate battle that awaits.
