Heat & Portland Trail Blazers Earn Initial Victories Following Recent Detentions
Miami recorded 86 opening half scores against the Memphis Grizzlies
The Heat secured a crushing 146 to 114 victory against the Grizzlies in their first NBA match after guard Rozier was arrested for alleged unlawful gambling.
Trail Blazers coach Billups was also arrested as part of a broad federal investigation into illegal gambling. The two individuals deny the claims.
But, the Heat were not distracted as they scored 86 first-half points to be ahead of Memphis by thirty-nine after two quarters, the largest half-time advantage in the team's 37 year existence.
Adebayo led the way with 24 points and later stated Terry had the support of the team.
"We stand behind him. Full support," Adebayo stated. "We are with him all the way. He's like family ultimately."
Heat coach Erik Spoelstra commented: "Terry is a person who is important to all of us. He has made a real positive impact on our team.
"Our thoughts are with him and our care for him as he faces this."
Portland also secured their initial match since the arrests, with Brazil-born Splitter taking over as temporary head coach in Billups' absence and guiding the team to a convincing 139-119 win over the Warriors.
"Everyone experienced positive times with Billups and his coaching style," Tiago said. "We're thinking of him and his loved ones but we have a job to do."
League Commissioner Adam Silver 'Upset' over Arrests
Speaking about the arrests for the initial occasion, league head Adam Silver said he was "very upset" by the incidents of the past few days.
"There's nothing more important to the league and its fans than the integrity of the competition," he told a broadcaster. "And so I felt uneasy. It was disturbing."
Silver further mentioned an NBA investigation into Rozier's conduct in spring 2023, when there was "aberrational betting" in a game he participated for the Hornets versus the New Orleans Pelicans, found nothing untoward.
"We were informed by the regulators and the gambling firms," he continued.
"We then looked into the matter and were very transparent regarding it. And while there was the unusual wagering, we, honestly, couldn't find anything.
"The federal government has legal authority... [it] can threaten to put people in jail, can take various actions that the NBA is unable to.
"Therefore, we've been cooperating since then. And, of course, what they revealed recently was an charge.
"And two and a half years later, he still hasn't been convicted of anything, in justice to Rozier.
"Obviously, it doesn't look good, but he's been put on administrative leave, and so it is a compromise in this case between upholding rights and investigating."
