Far-Right Former Congressman J.A. Kast Chosen as Chile New Head of State.

Following a conclusive runoff election, hardline figure José Antonio Kast has secured the top job in Chile.

A Commanding Win

After over 99% of ballots counted, Kast won 58.17% of the votes, defeating leftist candidate Jeannette Jara, who received 41.83%.

This signifies Kast's third attempt at the presidency, having previously been lost by the sitting president, Gabriel Boric, in the 2021 runoff.

Platform Built On Law and Order and Migration

Known for his strong socially conservative views and admiration for the era of former leader Augusto Pinochet, Kast's electoral bid was mostly built on promises to combat growing violence and drastically reduce immigration.

He repeatedly cited migrants, notably the around 330,000 illegal individuals in Chile, for security issues. Throughout the race, he delivered an ultimatum for them to exit before the March 11 handover or face deportation.

His policy ideas envisioned U.S.-style measures such as constructing detention centers, border walls, security fences, and bolstering the armed forces presence on the northern frontier.

Part of a Regional Wave

Numerous observers view Kast's win as fitting into a larger conservative shift in South America, similar to recent electoral outcomes in nations like Ecuador, Bolivia, and Argentina.

Yet, other pundits also describe it as a part of the regular rotation of power between left-wing and right governments since Chile's return to democracy in 1990.

Leading Lacking a Solid Majority

In spite of his sweeping popular vote victory, Kast is not expected to hold an absolute majority in Congress, not in the lower house or the Senate, even when various rightwing parties are counted together.

This legislative reality may complicate his policy goals, such as a vow to reduce public spending by a significant sum within 18 months—a measure for which he has not offered a clear explanation.

"There are numerous aspects about how a Kast presidency will be that we don't know because he has not explained his methods for do them," commented a political science expert.

The professor added, "In terms of fiscal matters, it is almost certain we will see austerity policies associated with the right-wing. But the area with considerably less doubt is on law and order, because that has been his workhorse across the race."
