Three police officers perished and at least 15 others got wounded in what appears to be premeditated gas explosion at a farmhouse in the northern part of Italy.

How It Happened

The explosion took place as officers and emergency crews went into the house in the vicinity of the Verona region to execute an removal notice for three siblings who were older adults.

All three officers killed were members of the Italian military police.

Legal Proceedings

Two individuals got detained at the site and another man who ran away following the explosion was found shortly later. All three have been taken to hospital.

The detonation could be audible as far as 3 miles distant and photographs from the location displayed the building left as a pile of rubble.

“We are in a period of mourning,” commented the Minister of the Interior Minister Piantedosi, who noted that efforts had been made to remove the brother and sister trio in the earlier times.

Financial Context

The head of the region of Veneto, the regional head, said the property was subject to an eviction order due to financial obligations accrued by the property owners.

Conflict resolution experts had been assigned to speak to the brothers and sister who had locked themselves into the home. When the Carabinieri came just after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), authorities think a family member triggered the detonation.

“As we went inside, we encountered a completely deranged action,” local police chief Claudio Papagno told news outlets.

A gas canister had been activated, and the detonation immediately struck our members,” he said.

Petrol bombs were also discovered at the property, the interior minister stated.

Impact Assessment

Injured individuals by the blast consisted of an additional 11 personnel of the military police as well as three members of Italy's state police and a firefighter.

Based on information from the local prosecutor, the farmhouse was in a dilapidated shape and had no electricity.

He thought the explosion had occurred on a level above the doorway and told reporters it was a “premeditated and voluntary homicide”. Just prior to the blast, he said personnel had “noticed a hissing sound, presumably the gas canisters being opened”.

Local Response

“We all knew the situation was dire,” nearby inhabitants stated to local news, noting that the trio had earlier warned to “detonate the property” rather than vacate the property.

“The explosion had left a ‘terrible, very painful and dramatic toll’.”

Minister of Defence the Defence Minister joined other political leaders in paying tribute to the three officers who had died in the service of their country.
